21 Nov Yvonne Danson – Current National Record for 5km, 10km and Marathon
Very recently, I have done my research and realised that it is important for me to put this up for seekers of running as a passion, especially for our locals. Many don’t know who Yvonne Danson is. She of British origin, who came to Singapore to teach in United World College and also to train in long distance.
Over time, she won bronze medal for England and also did 2hr 32min for Commonwealth Games marathon race for Women Open. She ran as a British Citizen then.
Later on, she ran and came in with a time of 2hr 30min for Boston Marathon race, while Mr Rameshon crashed out of the race at 30km, because of cramps. He realised that the race time was not on target for a sub – 2hr 30min, and aborted the race, as he decided to focus on the next marathon race, instead. Many had predicted that she had beaten all top local men in Singapore, except for Mr Rameshon. They told that it was a matter of time that this was able to take place.
Nevertheless, Yvonne, while getting plans from her coach overseas, trained with Mr Rameshon for a number of steady runs and also joined him for Loughborough Circuits, for strength training. Her husband Tan Choon Ghee also joined in the circuits as well. Later, she became Singapore Citizen, before 1995 SEA Games in Chiengmai, Thailand.
In SEA Games, however, she was told to do 10000m, just after the marathon race, which frightened her. It created panic in her and many well wishers, all over the world, advised her to avoid 10000m race. She wanted to opt out but it was too late. During breakfast and lunch, in 1995 SEA Games in Chiangmai, she complained to Mr Rameshon on the fright she was having as she has to still run 10000m, one or two days later. The detail of this story will be out as it is interesting to find out on how she fell down during the 10000m and got up to run and then got bronze medal.
As for the 1995 SEA Games marathon race, Mr Rameshon did 2hour 24min 22sec, and broke his own national marathon record, for Men Open Category. On the other hand, Ms Danson, did 2hr 34min, hence breaking the Singapore National Marathon Record, for Women Open Category. She got silver medal for the race, although, she did 2min slower than her 1994 Commonwealth marathon (2hr 32min 24sec) race and 4min slower than her 1995 Boston Marathon race. She still have two other records, 5000m and 10000m track and road 5km and 10km fastest time as a local road runner.
